When a backup is interrupted by an unexpected shutdown, you may receive one or more of the following errors:

The operation encountered an error. (Error code ‘BASEBACKUPCONTROLLER_018’)

The backup location contains too many bad data blocks. The operation was stopped for safety reasons. (Error code ‘DEDUP_064’)
Verification detected several bad data blocks. This can be due to disk failures that are resulting in data corruption. Please run disk diagnostic tools and consider replacing the hardware in order to proceed with the backups.

In our case, the NAS RAID and SMART disk utility indicated the disks and the array were in good health. The error appeared to be caused by soft errors or corrupted data that occurred during an unexpected shutdown of the NAS during the backup process. We were able to remediate using the validation feature in Altaro backup.

Scan the affected NAS share and allow the process to complete. Depending on the volume and data sizes, it can take several hours or even an entire day. Once the backup completes, the errors are usually compensated for and you can continue to run backups on the shared folder.
